Hoonigan – Ken Block’s Climbkhana

Two of my favorite things combined. Like Peanut Butter and Chocolate – Gymkhana and Pikes Peak.

Ken Block and his now methanol fueled twin-turbo Hoonicorn Mustang tackle the 14,410 toll road up Pikes Peak.

Was fortunate enough to be a part of the project as a camera operator and drone pilot. Climbkhana was a serious endeavor and the mountain gave us some real challenges – resulting in three trips back to Colorado to capture all of the footage necessary to make the end film. Was a great time to work with Jeff Zwart, who I’ve filmed many times at Pikes Peak racing and my friends at Hoonigan on this one!

Los Angeles, California – June 11, 2015 – The Telly Awards has named Will Roegge + Company as the winner of two Silver awards in the 35th Annual Telly Awards for their pieces titled BBI: A New Mountain to Climb and The Porsche from the Winter of 53. With nearly 12,000 entries from all 50 states and numerous countries, this is truly an honor.
BBI: A New Mountain to Climb
For Betim Berisha, years of hard work and determination paid off when he was able to start his own shop – BBI Autosport. In 2014 BBI Autosport took on the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb with driver Jeff Zwart. The film documents BBI’s 2014 effort at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb with seven time PPIHC Champion Jeff Zwart. Zwart approached BBI Autosport to build his dream Porsche for the hill climb. www.youtube.com/watch?v=TY7hwTvl53E

The Telly Awards was founded in 1979 and is the premier award honoring outstanding local, regional, and cable TV commercials and programs, the finest video and film productions, and online commercials, video and films. Winners represent the best work of the most respected advertising agencies, production companies, television stations, cable operators, and corporate video departments in the world.
A prestigious judging panel of over 500 accomplished industry professionals, each a past winner of a Silver Telly and a member of The Silver Telly Council, judged the competition, upholding the historical standard of excellence that Telly represents. The Silver Council evaluated entries to recognize distinction in creative work – entries do not compete against each other – rather entries are judged against a high standard of merit. Less than 10% of entries are chosen as Winners of the Silver Telly, our highest honor. Approximately 25% of entries are chosen as Winners of the Bronze Telly.
“The Telly Awards has a mission to honor the very best in film and video,” said Linda Day, Executive Director of the Telly Awards. “Will Roegge + Company’s accomplishment illustrates their creativity, skill, and dedication to their craft and serves as a testament to great film and video production.”
“We couldn’t be more happy to win two Telly Awards this year! BBI: A New Mountain Climb is a great story and to have it win in the “documentary category” validates it. We want to thank BBI Autosport and Betim Berisha for giving us the opportunity to tell their story. The second award is in the Online Video Automotive category for “The Porsche from the Winter of 53” – which is a honor considering that the project was created by two people over the course of two days with limited resources. Thanks to Jeff Zwart for the opportunity and for always supporting us.”

A New Mountain to Climb – BBI Autosport at Pikes Peak

This year we produced two pieces at the PPIHC.

The second and longer documentary video follows BBI Autosport as they prepare Jeff Zwart’s 997 GT3 Cup Turbo – Hill Climb Special for the 2014 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. BBI Autosport is based in Huntington Beach, California they specialize in Porsche and exotic car performance tuning.

In this 10 minute documentary I wanted to capture what made Betim Berisha’s story so special. It is his determination and commitment. Betim didn’t take an easy road to becoming a race engineer – he took on lots of risk and challenged himself. He left his life in Washington state and was homeless for a few months while trying to make a career in Southern California. It paid off when he eventually was hired by Porsche Motorsport North America. After a few years of building customer cars in his spare time, Betim started BBI Autosport and recruited talented friends to come work with him. Their commitment to doing things with passion and creativity caught the attention of Pikes Peak International Hill Climb champion Jeff Zwart who hired BBI to build his next Hill Climb race car.

We conducted interviews in Colorado Springs during the week of the hill climb as well as shot BBI’s facilities while they were prepping the car. Due to a fuel pump failure, we weren’t given the championship winning ending that looked certain during practice and qualifying – however that made the overall message more important. To me, that message is don’t quit. Keep pushing and taking opportunities. Passion will make you successful.

Jeff Zwart – Pikes Peak International Hill Climb 2014

2014 marks my fifth year covering the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb and the fourth film I’ve done with Jeff Zwart. With the road being fully paved for the past 3 years now – I really wanted to emphasize speed in this year’s film. In 2013 we shot the film with a combination of cameras and this year we decided to produce the film in 4k UHD resolution. It looks great at maximum resolution, if you have a resolution and connection bandwidth I recommend changing the settings to 2k or 4k.

Hyundai – Pikes Peak 2013

Rhys Millen Racing and Hyundai at Pikes Peak 2013

My production company, Will Roegge + Company, was hired to create a series of 12 videos for Hyundai North America documenting Rhys Millen Racing’s 2013 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb campaign.

We started in February, 2013 with the design inspiration and planning of the build and concluded in June, 2013 with the run up Pikes Peak. For 2013, Rhys Millen Racing had a two car program – Rhys in the unlimited class and Paul Dallenbach in the time attack class. It was exciting to watch both drivers battle it out within their respective classes. Rhys ended up with 2nd place overall and setting the fastest 2 wheel drive car time ever at Pikes Peak. While Paul ended up first in class and set a new record for the time attack class.

Luminox Watches – Pikes Peak 2013 :60

After the success of the 2013 Pikes Peak film this year with Jeff Zwart – I was asked to do a sixty second version of the film for Luminox watches. Here is the :60 spot which will be used at trade shows and on social networks.

Pikes Peak 2013 – Jeff Zwart & Luminox

For a third year, I’ve worked with Jeff Zwart to capture his race up Pikes Peak.

I feel like the third time is the charm. In the years past we’ve told stories of the mountain and getting to the mountain – this year its about the experience of racing it. The first year I directed a Pikes Peak film with Jeff Zwart was 2010. Pikes Peak was still mixed gravel and pavement and the 10 minute barrier still stood. Thinking about my personal experience at Pikes Peak I’m lucky to have been there to witness the road with dirt. It was a different road, driver’s could pick their line through a wider section of road and the rally style being pitched sideways through one of the mountain’s corners is one of the coolest things to see and film.

Skipping 2012 due to work conflicts, Jeff and I both made our return to Pikes this year and found a different road. The competition has changed and the road is so fast. Driving the highway as a tourist its hard to imagine drivers hitting triple digit speeds while my rental car gasps for air at 45mph. Hopefully this film captures the essence of Jeff’s Porsche GT3 Cup Hill Climb Special. It is an incredible machine, a skilled driver, all on a challenging road in a race to the clouds.
